💵 Automatic Gratuities & Tipping Decoded

Modern cruise lines utilize a centralized tipping framework called automatic gratuities to simplify the compensation process for their staff.

  • The Basic Rate: Cruise lines automatically charge a fixed daily service fee per passenger, per night to your onboard stateroom account. For standard interior and balcony cabins, expect fees ranging between $16.00 and $19.50 per person, per day (with luxury suites billed up to $24.50 daily). Children are billed at the exact same daily rate as adults on most lines.
  • Where the Money Goes: This automated pool is split evenly among the invisible backend crew and front-facing service staff who take care of your family, including your specific stateroom cabin stewards, main dining room waiters, assistant servers, and galley culinary workers.
  • How to Pay: You can either pre-pay these gratuities online at the time of your initial booking to keep your onboard bill clean, or let them accumulate daily to be paid via your registered credit card on disembarkation morning.
  • The “Sneaky” 18%–20% Auto-Tips: When you purchase individual drinks at a ship lounge, buy a specialty beverage package, order a massage at the ship spa, or book a premium specialty dining restaurant, the cruise line will automatically append a separate 18% to 20% service gratuity directly onto that specific receipt. Look closely at your bill so you don’t accidentally tip double at bars.
  • Cash Tipping Etiquette: While automatic daily fees cover your primary bases, bringing a small stack of physical cash is standard pro-cruiser practice. It is customary to hand $2 to $5 per heavy bag directly to the shoreside porters who take your luggage at the terminal. Leaving an extra $20 to $50 cash envelope for an exceptional stateroom steward or main waiter on the final evening is highly appreciated but entirely optional.
