You’ve booked the flights. The resort is locked in. The swimsuits are neatly folded in the suitcase. You are officially ready for your family vacation—or are you?
After years of planning family getaways, I have noticed that parents are excellent at packing the big stuff, but often leave behind the small, sanity-saving items. Before you zip up your bags, make sure these five often-overlooked essentials are packed in your carry-on.
I’ll keep this post short and sweet with these tried and true essentials.
1. The Pop-Up Mesh Laundry Hamper
Nothing ruins a relaxing hotel stay faster than a “floordrobe” of dirty, sand-filled clothes. A cheap, collapsible mesh hamper takes up zero room in your luggage. Pop it open in the hotel closet on day one to keep dirty clothes off the floor and away from your clean outfits.
2. A Pre-Packaged First Aid Kit (With Kids’ Meds)
Finding a pharmacy in an unfamiliar city or a foreign country at 2:00 AM is a nightmare. Do not rely on the hotel gift shop. Always pack a small pouch with children’s fever reducers, bandages, motion sickness remedies, and rehydration packets.
3. A Multi-Port USB Charger & Extra-Long Cords
Hotel rooms and cruise cabins never seem to have enough outlets for a modern family. Pack a single high-speed charging block with 4 to 6 USB ports. Bring extra-long cables so your kids can charge their devices while relaxing in bed during afternoon downtime.
4. Painter’s Tape
This is the ultimate secret weapon for parents of toddlers. Painter’s tape is safe, leaves no residue, and has endless uses. Use it to baby-proof low hotel outlets, tape down loose cords, block out a bright flashing smoke detector light, or use it as a makeshift toy car track on the floor.
5. Premium Snacks for the Parents
We always pack crackers, fruit snacks, and juice boxes for the kids. But what about you? Hanger hits parents, too. Pack a few high-protein bars, premium nuts, or gourmet chocolates just for adults. You will need that quick energy boost during long transit lines.
